HBO chose the city of Seville as one of its enclaves to film Game of Thrones. Here you can find all the places of interest that the actors and film crew visited when shooting the show.
This is one of the favorite Sevillian places for the setting of the American series. The gardens of the Real Alcázar of Seville represented the Water Gardens of Dorne, the headquarters of the Casa Martell. The area is ideal for staging the Land of Dorne, where abundant vegetation and water-filled fountains are a symbol of power and wealth. It is practically already a film set in itself, with very few modifications necessary since it is already an image of opulence and majesty.
Game of Thrones has made it possible for many Sevillians to see a hidden treasure of their city through the show. The Royal Atarazanas of Seville is the best preserved medieval shipyard in the world. In the HBO series it has become the crypt that hides the ultimate weapon to be used against Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons. Specifically, they were decorated like the dungeons of the Red Fort in King’s Landing. Nowadays, they cannot be visited as the building is facing a process of restoration and rehabilitation. Let us hope that the acclaim of the American TV series and its followers will speed up the political decisions for its opening.
Constructions of historical interest like the ruins of Italica of Santiponce are one of the favorite locations for the producers of Game of Thrones. The large dimensions of the Roman amphitheater provide a comfortable environment for the set and scenes with many extras, something we’ve become accustomed to. The amphitheater was used as Dragonpit in King's Landing. The area was closed for a month for filming. Like other Sevillian sets for Game of Thrones, it is expected that the series will return to this enclave in the last season.
The Sevillian municipality of Osuna was also one of the places chosen for filming by those responsible for the production of Game of Thrones. In the bullring of Osuna some of the show’s bloodiest scenes took place, as it was used as Daznak's Pit in Meereen. Since the filming of the show, Osuna has experienced a big upturn in tourism. There is even a bar that has taken advantage of this by giving their tapas the names of the characters.
